Tanager volleyball team rebounds with quad win by Jim Prosser The best way to respond to a whippin' is to change the neighborhood and the Tanager volleyball team found one more to their liking as they won the East/West Quadrangular at Todd County by sweeping the meet involving the host Todd County, Custer and Lennox on Friday, Jan. 6.
Following a long, weary ride way out to West River country, it appeared that the varsity might suffer the same fate as at the Southeast Area Classic. But, after a close 12-15 loss in the first game against Todd County, Vermillion came storming back with 15-9 and 15-7 wins while never looking back.
Karen Sorensen led the offense with 4 aces, 8 service points, 7 digs, and 9 kills. She was accompanied by Leslie Larson with 8 service points, 8 digs, 12 kills, and 2 blocks. Carey Engstrom had the most service points with 11, including 2 aces, and she also had 3 blocks and 5 digs.
Not to be overlooked were Ashley Bjorkman 7 kills, 10 digs; and Jaclyn Powell 9 service points, 9 digs, 5 kills, and 4 blocks. Elly Kjose recorded 33 assists!
The Tanagers' path to the championship included a 15-7, 15-11 sweep of Lennox in the second match. Bjorkman led the Tanagers with 10 service points, 3 aces, 4 kills, and 8 digs. Engstrom, Larson, and Nikki Mollet each had 5 kills and 2 blocks. Mollet had 4 blocks (3 solos).
Meggie Donnelly had 15 assists, 2 aces, 3 digs, 2 kills and a block.
Game #3 was more of the same as Custer fell to the Tanager juggernaut 15-2, 15-6. It didn't take long and the stats are sparse but Donnelly led with 14 assists, 7 service points, 1 ace. Larson scored 7 service points, 3 aces. Ashley Thompson registered a best 7 kills. Bjorkman had 3 kills, 6 service points, 2 aces, and 2 digs. Sorensen recorded 3 solo blocks.
Final standings in the quadrangular were: Vermillion 3-0; Todd County 2-1, Lennox 1-2 and Custer 0-3
