Tanagers defeated by Warriors 76-66 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers watched a second-half lead evaporate and were downed by the Winner Warriors 76-66 in boys� basketball Jan. 13 at Dakota Valley.
The Vermillion varsity had led by four at halftime.
Bo Nelson scored 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Jon Brooks scored 10 points and had seven assists.
�Tim Russell added seven points and seven rebounds,� said Vermillion varsity Coach Troy Terronez. �Brett Hogen scored eight points.�
The Vermillion varsity jumped ahead 24-14 after the first quarter, but was outscored 21-15 in the second period and 17-12 in the third to trail 52-51 going into the final period.
The Vermillion varsity lost the game from the free throw line, making 9 of 14 charity tosses compared with 31 of 49 for Winner varsity. The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only seven turnovers and the Warriors committing only six.
�We had the best start that I�ve seen this year, grabbing a 10 point lead at the end of the first quarter,� said Coach Terronez. �Then, our fouls caught up to us. We put them on the line throughout the remaining three quarters and they hit their shots. They ended the game shooting 31 of 49 from the line. We cannot put good teams like this on the line.�
The Vermillion varsity saw its record fall to 3-2, while the Winner varsity upped its mark to 6-2.
The Vermillion varsity connected on 7 of 22 three-point attempts. The Tanagers hit 18 of 30 from the field, while the Winner varsity was 18 of 45 from the field. The Winner varsity sank 3 of 7 three-pointers.
