USD Student Theatre Cooperative presents Rumpelstiltskin Feb. 3 The University of South Dakota's Student Theatre cooperative is proud to present a marionette version of the timeless children's classic Rumpelstiltskin, Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. in the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre.
STC's puppeteering project is headed by Douglas Strich, a sophomore theatre major who learned the art of puppeteering from James Racioppi, artistic director of the renowned Paper Moon Marionette Theatre in New Jersey. Strich has adapted Rumpelstiltskin to the marionette stage, constructed, painted, and costumed all of the marionettes, and has trained the puppeteers for the show. Brian Adams, Leigh Radershadt, Geryd Vandenberg, and Strich function as puppeteers while Brian Adams, Carin Cornette, Susie Gulbranson, Tim Leith, William Myers, and Patrick Pope provide the delightful character voices. Professor Tim Case has designed and painted an attractive stage for the action.
Although marionette theatre is rarely seen, it is great family entertainment and generally regarded as a wonderful way to introduce young people to classic children's tales like Rumpelstiltskin.
Admission to Rumpelstiltskin is $1 or a canned food donation per person. Donations of food will be delivered to the local food pantry by Student Theatre Cooperative. General admission tickets will be available at the USD Theatre box office in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts beginning at noon on Feb 3.
