Vermillion wins with 'buzzer-beater' by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers slipped by the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 63-62 in boys� varsity basketball Jan. 22 at Alcester in a matchup that was close throughout.
�We played strong at times, but we need to identify situations in the game,� said Vermillion varsity Coach Troy Terronez. �Some critical decisions were made that allowed Alcester to take the lead near the end of the fourth quarter. However, the boys did what it took to win the game.�
The Vermillion varsity carried the game from long range, making 7 of 16 three pointers to 2 of 13 for Alcester-Hudson.
The Tanagers jumped in front 17-16 after the first quarter, the score was 33-33 at halftime, and the Tanagers led 45-42 going into the final period.
The Vermillion varsity improved its season mark to 4-4.
The Vermillion varsity sank 6 of 13 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 18 of 37 field goal attempts, while Alcester-Hudson was 23 of 33 from the field. The Cubs hit 10 of 15 free throw tries.
The winners needed good efforts from several performers.
�Bo Nelson scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and Jeremi Cowman made his third 3-pointer at the buzzer to win the game,� Coach Terronez said. �Paul Tims controlled an offensive rebound with 28 seconds left to give us an opportunity for Jeremi�s buzzer beater.�
