Wrestling team places two at invitational in Sioux Falls by Jim Prosser Sixteen schools were represented at the Floyd Farrand Wrestling Invitational in Sioux Falls during the Christmas holidays, Dec. 22-23, at Lincoln High School.
Sturgis, with 203 points, won the team title for the second time in a row, while Vermillion placed 15th with only two wrestlers winning places in their weight classes.
Chris Sinkie, at 171 lbs., won four matches and lost two, placing fifth.
Heavyweight Ray O'Connor lost only once � to eventual champion Ryan Kotzea from Milbank in a 2-1 overtime decision. He then proceeded to win his remaining matches to gain third place.
Ben Parsons was the only other Tanager to survive the second round, winning the first round wrestle-back with a major 16-2 decision over Josh Weichman from Wagner.
This tournament has become the premier competition which probably surpasses each of the South Dakota state A or B meets.
"With nearly half of the teams entered being ranked in the top 10 in either Class A or B, the competition was outstanding and gave us a chance to evaluate our boys for their progress, thus far," said Coach Travis Slaba.
