Custer's solid play too much for Tanagers by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were downed by Custer 60-48 in boys varsity basketball Feb. 3 at Custer as the winner held the lead after each quarter.
Bo Nelson scored 24 points for Vermillion.
Bo is usually recognized for his offensive ability, however, he proved that he can play both ends of the court, said Vermillion varsity Coach Troy Terronez. Custers Paige Paulson, who averages 24 points per game, was held to only six points, and Bo was a big part of that.
The Tanagers trailed 11-4 after the opening period, trailed 21-18 at halftime, and then trailed 32-28 going into the final period.
The contest was well-played, with each team committing only seven turnovers.
Custer has a solid program and came out with hard defense, said Coach Terronez. It took us awhile to adjust, only scoring four points in the first quarter. After that, the boys always had the game in their reach, but a couple of 3-pointers by Custer and some good free throw shooting took the game.
The Vermillion varsity saw its record fall to 6-5, while Custer upped its mark to 10-5.
The Vermillion varsity hit 4 of 15 three-pointers and sank 14 of 17 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 11 of 23 from the field, while Custer was 14 of 28 from the field. Custer sank 5 of 16 three-pointers and sank 17 of 21 from the line.
