Luminarias will light the way Luminaria sales are brisk as the DakotaDome Relay for Life nears. One of the more touching features of the event, to be held Sunday, Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will be a circle of luminarias lighted by twinkle lights.
Each white paper bag bears a name either honoring someone who has survived cancer or
remembering someone who has died of the disease.
For a $5 donation, people in the community can place a bag at the event and even decorate it beforehand or have it decorated at the relay. At last year's relay, the luminarias, a circle of hope, stretched all the way around the inside of the track, in some places two deep.
Five Vermillion locations are giving time and space by selling luminarias: the Vermillion Civic Council store, Deb's Hallmark, Nook 'N Cranny, Vermillion Beauty Shop, and Vermillion Credit Union.
The relay, sponsored by the Clay County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and the USD Special Events Class, is the county's largest fund raiser for the American Cancer Society.
The relay is one of hundreds such events nationwide that raises money for the American Cancer Society for research projects, services for cancer patients and educational programs aimed at preventing cancer and recognizing symptoms.
