Panthers fall to Vermillion 68-57 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers downed the Dakota Valley Panthers 68-57 in boys� varsity basketball Feb. 6 at Dakota Valley. The Tanagers led after each quarter.
�Bo, Brett and Jeremi came alive on the offensive end for us,� said Vermillion varsity Coach Troy Terronez. �However, everyone worked well in the offense to give these boys the high percentage shots they took. We�ve been hitting our free throws for the last two games now. This has definitely improved our confidence at the right time of the season.�
The Tanagers took the lead 21-16 after the first quarter, and margins of 13-9 and 10-9 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 44-34 going into the final period.
The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 7-5, while Dakota Valley dropped to 8-6.
The Vermillion varsity hit four of 10 3-point attempts and hit 12 of 18 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 22 of 33 field goal attempts, while Dakota Valley was 15 of 29 from the field. Dakota Valley sank three of 14 3-pointers and sank 18 of 26 from the line.
Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.
�Paul Tims worked hard on the glass to grab seven boards,� Coach Terronez said. �It amazes me how he�s able to locate the ball coming off the rim, but he just has that ability.�
