Polaris fifth-graders place third in tourney The Vermillion Polaris fifth-grade basketball team coached by Joey James has begun a successful season. This past weekend in Sioux Falls, the cagers placed third in the A Division of the Magic Shootout Basketball Tournament.
Action began Friday night against the Brookings Bobcats. Despite being shutout by Vermillions zone defense over the first eight minutes, the Bobcats were able to come back for the win 30-21.
Vermillion's first game on Saturday was against the Yankton Rockers. The scoring was tight throughout until Polaris was able to extend the margin at the end for a 39-30 victory.
In third place action to close the tournament, Vermillion beat the Sioux Falls Hoopstars 31-26. The locals fell behind 16-3 in the first half, but rallied behind their stiff defense to limit the Hoopstars to 6 second half points.
On Jan. 19 and 20, the Polaris team opened its season by winning the consolation championship of the Vermillion DakotaDome Tournament. The fifth-graders lost in the opener of B Division action to the West Sioux Falcons. They then came back with a 40-29 win over the Sioux City Rebels and a 34-26 victory over the Sioux City Computer Supply Warehouse.
