Program combines music from East and West Gao Hong, the virtuoso Chinese pipa player, will join with the Belladonna Baroque Ensemble from the Twin Cities to present a unique program, "Folk and Court Music from East and West," in the Arne B. Larson Concert Hall at America's Shrine to Music Museum on the campus of The University of South Dakota, Sunday, Feb. 25, at 2:30 p.m.
A native of China, Gao Hong is a master of the pipa, a four-stringed Chinese lute. She was the top student of the pipa master Lin Shicheng.
The winner of numerous awards, Gao has performed throughout Europe, Australia, Japan, China and the USA with symphony orchestras, jazz players, musicians from other cultures, and professional Chinese music and opera troupes. She also did a world tour recently with the Lincoln Center (New York) production of "The Peony Pavilion."
Belladonna, which features Clea Galhano, the Brazilian recorder virtuoso, along with Margaret Humphrey, Baroque violin, Rebecca Humphrey, Baroque cello, and Barbara Weiss, harpsichord, creates an extraordinary chemistry that the Boston Globe calls "as fresh as jazz."
