Recorder quartet to perform Feb. 4 The Flanders Recorder Quartet from Belgium, with Steve Dugardin, countertenor, will present a concert of "English Consort Music and Songs" at the Shrine to Music Museum on the campus of The University of South Dakota, Sunday, Feb. 4, at 2:30 p.m.
The quartet, which was the highlight of the museum's 1995-1996 concert season, performs on more than 100 recorders of different shapes and sizes. The ensemble has played at major music festivals in Europe, Japan, Singapore, Mexico, and South America, as well as the Boston Early Music Festival and, most recently, the Berkeley Festival in California.
Joining the quartet for this winter's U.S. tour is Steve Dugardin, the renowned young countertenor who sings regularly with the Chapelle Royale in Paris and the Collegium Vocale of Ghent. He and the quartet have both recorded widely for Harmonia, Mundi, Archiv, Vox, and Deutsche Gramophone.
Critics praise the quartet's "daring improvisational flair, blazing speed, sharp ensemble precision and rhythm, and a startling range of dynamics."
