Sixth-grade girls win Tri-State The Vermillion girls' sixth-grade Burger King team won the Division 4 crown at the recent Tri-State Girls' Basketball Tournament held in Sioux Falls.
In their first game, the girls defeated the Tea Chargers by the score of 34-15. Burger King employed a very effective 1-3-1 zone press on defense and were led offensively by Alicia Brown's 10 points. Annie Roche and Hannah Pommersheim contributed 8 points each. Additional scoring was supplied by Anna Isaacson, McKinsey Weydert, Kaili Johnson and Brittni Stewart.
In the semi-final game, Burger King defeated Sioux Falls Koch 16-5. In this contest, Burger King again employed its very effective 1-3-1 zone press and were led defensively by the hustle of Ariel Hofman. Offensively, Roche led the way with 6 points. Brown and Pommersheim added 4 points each.
In the championship game, Vermillion defeated Dell Rapids 31-14. Roche directed the offense and led all scorers with 12 points, followed by Brown and Hofman who scored 6 points each. Defensively, the Burger Kings girls combined their zone press with a hustling person to person defense. Pommersheim was instrumental in controlling the defensive board.
Coach Randy Isaacson praised the entire team for their hard work and dedication throughout the season. He was particularly gratified to see his team's discipline and determination result in a championship.
