Tanager volleyball teams win two at Bon Homme dual by Jim Prosser The Tanagers� volleyball team enjoyed a break in the weather Thursday, Jan. 25 as they traveled to Bon Homme for a varsity and junior varsity dual where wins were the rule of the day.
The varsity match with Bon Homme was a two-game repeat victory for the Vermillion Tanagers with scores of 15-7 and 15-4.
Leslie Larson, with six statistical categories scored, had 4 service points, one ace, four digs, three kills, and six blocks (five solos) to lead the team. Carey Engstrom had 15 service points with four aces, two blocks, seven digs and five kills. Ashley Bjorkman had seven kills to lead the team in that category and Elly Kjose recorded 19 assists, 3 service points, six digs, and two blocks. Nikki Mollet scored six kills and four blocks (three solos) while Jaclyn Powell had an assist, two kills, 2 service points and three digs. Tressa Olson was credited with 5 service points and two digs.
The junior varsity made it a clean sweep by beating the home JV team 15-8, 15-13. Leaders in serving were Ashley Thompson with 10 points, and Meggie Donnelly with 8. Leading spikers with six and four kills, respectively, were Karen Sorensen and Dru Vankley. Donnelly had seven set assists and Tessa Tuetken recorded four.
Dani Weydert and Allison Stewart led the defense with four and three digs, respectively.
Assistant Coach Chris Fehring said, �I was very proud of the girls tonight. They never gave up on themselves. We were down as much as 8-2 in the second game and came roaring back to win. That shows that these girls play with a lot of heart.�
