Vermillion varsity beats Douglas 51-42 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the last stanza to defeat Douglas 51-42 in boys� varsity basketball Feb. 2 at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
The Vermillion varsity had led by only 2 heading into the final quarter.
Tim Russell scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
�Tim had a great opportunity to score and he took advantage,� said Vermillion varsity Coach Troy Terronez. �He was the biggest player out there and he played like it.�
The Tanagers led 14-13 after the first quarter, led 24-23 after the second period, and then held a lead of 37-35 going into the fourth quarter.
The Tanagers committed only six turnovers in the victory.
�The boys played good defense, but Douglas hit some tough shots,� said Coach Terronez. �Down the stretch, we did what it took to win the game. It was tied at 41, and the boys turned it up and pulled away.�
The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 6-4, while Douglas dropped to 3-12.
The Vermillion varsity connected on two of five 3-pointers and hit 11 of 20 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 17 of 35 field goal attempts, while Douglas was 11 of 30 from the field. Douglas sank six of 18 3-point attempts and connected on two of six free throw tries.
