Vermillion varsity defeats the Bulldogs by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers topped the Madison Bulldogs 58-49 in varsity boys� basketball Feb. 16 at Madison as the winners led after each quarter.

Bo Nelson scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds, followed by Paul Tims who scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Tim Russell scored 9 points.

�Paul and Bo opened the middle by hitting some 3-pointers,� said Vermillion Varsity Coach Troy Terronez. �Bo was four for four. Then Tim Russell posted hard and provided an inside threat. Working on a balanced inside/outside game has been effective for us.�

The Tanagers led 16-14 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 32-24 at halftime, and then led 47-39 going into the final period.

The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 9-5, while Madison dropped to 9-7.

The Vermillion varsity connected on six of 22 3-pointers and made 12 of 20 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 14 of 26 field goal attempts, while Madison was 15 of 33 from the field. Madison hit two of 12 3-pointers and made 13 of 15 free throw attempts.

Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.

�Jon Brooks and Nick Olson played some quality basketball and had some big plays,� Coach Terronez said. �Nick had two baskets in the third when Madison was making a run, and Jon threaded a pass through the lane that even put the Madison fans in awe.�
