VHS earns fourth place at Madison Invite The Tanager volleyball team joined in a 12-team invitational tournament on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Madison.
The schools were assigned to one of four pools, each containing three teams � Pool #1 (Madison, Philip and Sisseton); #2 (Arlington, Milbank and West Central); #3 (Dell Rapids, Miller and Vermillion); and #4 (Hamlin, Lennox, and Tri-Valley).
The Tanagers won both matches in Pool #3, defeating Miller 15-13, 15-5; and Dell Rapids 15-6, 14-16, 15-6.
In match #1, leaders for VHS were: Elly Kjose � 13 assists, five service points, one ace, one dig, two blocks; Ashley Bjorkman � six kills, four blocks, two service points and two digs; Leslie Larson � one block, two kills, four aces (10 service points) and four digs; Carey Engstrom � six digs, two kills, three service points, one ace and one block.
Jaclyn Powell had one assist, six kills and four digs, and Nikki Mollet was credited with four kills and five blocks. Karen Sorensen had five service points, one ace and two digs.
Match #2 was a three-game affair against "Dells," so stats were more numerable. Defensive blocks and digs were shared almost equally by the members of the Tanager team.
Kjose scored the most assists with 21. Powell had five aces (12 service points), five digs, three blocks (two solos) and three kills.
Larson led the defense with eight kills, six service points, five blocks (three solos) and five digs. Bjorkman had seven kills, three service points, one ace and two digs.
Match #3 paired Vermillion with the winner from Pool #1, Philip, and the semi-final match was another marathon three games long as the Tanagers fell 15-6, 4-15, 5-6.
Larson, with 12 service points, four aces, two digs, one kill and five blocks (three solos) was the leader of the flock. Powell had six service points, two blocks, two assists and five digs.
Bjorkman had five kills and three service points, one ace and one dig. Kjose recorded 14 assists, one service point, three digs, and one kill. Mollet led the defense with 10 kills and four solo blocks, along with Engstrom with seven digs and five kills.
This brought the team to the consolation final against pool #4 semi loser Hamlin � a two-game "screamer" which left the Tanagers in fourth place after losing 14-16 and 13-15.
The leader in assists was again Kjose with 20. She also recorded three kills and five digs. Bjorkman had seven service points, two aces, six digs, four blocks and five kills. Powell led with 11 digs and had three blocks and four kills.
Larson shared the service point lead with Bjorkman with seven, two aces, six digs, seven kills and four blocks. Engstrom, with six service points and six digs, was joined by Mollet who had three blocks and five kills.
