VHS volleyball team goes 1 of 3 at Yankton The Vermillion High School gym was full of fans again Monday night, Feb. 5, when the Tanager volleyball team welcomed the Gazelles from Yankton for another exciting triple header for their enjoyment, even though the results were a "downer" for the Tanager varsity and freshmen squads who lost both games in their matches.
The varsity team, with 9-15 and 9-15 scores, and the C team failing 0-15 and 7-15, made the two-game sweep for the junior varsity at 15-10 and 15-8 a bright spot for the home fans who were decked out in a Hawaiin motif with leis, garlands, grass skirts and colorful shirts (meant to help the winter blues go away).
"In the first game the girls 'psyched' themselves out playing against an older team," said C team Coach Jana Prasek. "But I was pleased in the second game as they played up to their potential and demonstrated teamwork."
Players cited for their efforts were: Colette Joy four assists and four digs; Brittany Orr two digs; Kayla Mollett 3 aces; Steph Bliss two kills; Theresa Ring 1 ace; Kat Redlin one block; and Nicki Nelson three digs.
The C team season record stands at 6-5.
The junior varsity coach, Chris Fehring, has led her team to an excellent 15-3 season record. She recognized the efforts of the following players: Allison Stewart 8 service points, 1 ace; Dani Weydert 7 points, 1 ace; and Karen Sorensen 6 points, 4 aces. Meggie Donnelly, with 15 assists, and Whitney Tolsma, with five assists were the leading setters.
Dru Vankley, Ashley Thompson and Tessa Tuetken scored five, four, and three kills, respectively, to lead the spikers. Vankley had three blocks while the defense was led by Stewart with six digs and Weydert with four.
"I was very pleased with the team play we showed tonight," Coach Fehring said. "We were ready to play right from the start. These girls have a lot of determination and you can sure see it by the way they play."
Head Coach Kathy Reckling has attained an excellent varsity volleyball team season record of 16 wins, eight losses, and two ties.
