City council races develop

City council races develop Local voters in Vermillion will go to the polls April 10 in Vermillion's southeast and central wards to elect new representatives to the city council.

Creighton Thurman and Dennis Zimmerman have both successfully circulated petitions for nomination for election to the council as alderman from the southeast ward.

Alderman Frank Slagle, the southeast ward's incumbent, is not seeking re-election.

Alderman Leo Powell of the central award also isn't seeking another term. A three-candidate election involving Drake Olson, Carol Sanderson and David Lias has developed to fill that position.

Incumbent Joe Grause has filed petitions to serve another two-year term on the city council representing the northwest ward. He is unopposed.

School board incumbents Nick Merrigan and Floyd Boschee have filed petitions with Business Manager Sheila DeSmet. Both are seeking another three-year term on the board.

DeSmet received no other nominating petitions before the March 9 filing deadline. Merrigan and Boschee face no opposition, and there will be no school board election.
