Huggett strikes out 15 in sweep over Northern Junior Matt Huggett pitched a two-hitter against Northern State in a 7-1 USD victory in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, March 20 at the Headid Baseball Complex in Sioux City, IA.
Huggett struck out 15 Wolves batters in seven innings, allowing only two singles. The Coyotes won game two by a score of 4-1 on junior Mike Parkin's six innings of three-hit ball.
USD now has a 7-6 record on the season while Northern State fell to 0-10.
Huggett (2-1) controlled the Wolves from the start, striking out four of the first six batters he faced. He struck out two batters in every inning except for the fourth, when he struck out the side.
The Wolves were able to manage only two infield singles–one in the third on a slow roller to second and a tapper in front of the mound in the fifth in suffering their ninth loss of the season.
However, the game was not decided until the bottom of the sixth, when the Coyotes posted five runs to break open a 2-1 game. Up until that point, USD had scored its two runs on a double by Derek Huxford and a single by Nate Dunlap in the second.
The Wolves got a run home in the fourth on Jim May's run-scoring tapper back to Huggett. USD then put the game out of reach when David Iman hit a one-out solo home run down the left-field line in the sixth to start the five-run barrage.
Huxford then singled up the middle, and Dunlap hit his first home run of the season on a shot to left, chasing starter Ryan Albrecht, who took the loss. Dave Holoch relieved, got a pop-up, but Dustin Moore singled to center to keep the inning alive.
Chris Laws then hit a two-run homer to left to give the Coyotes a 7-1 lead.
Dunlap went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Huxford 3-for-3 with an RBI double, and Laws went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the hitting attack for the Coyotes.
Game two was a little closer than the first, as neither team was able to distance itself from the other. Dunlap broke a scoreless tie in the second on a suicide squeeze play, scoring in Huxford.
NSU tied it back up in the third on May's homer to left-center, one of only three Wolves' hits.
USD regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning on Eric Archer's home run down the left-field line. The Coyotes scored two more in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Moore and Archer, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Parkin (1-2) followed Huggett's performance with an 11-strikeout effort of his own. He gave up just the three hits, one run, and one walk. He struck out five NSU batters twice in collecting his first win of the season. Rob Miller came in the seventh to pick up his first save of the season.
NSU starter Jake Foslien pitched a complete-game in taking the loss. He gave up four runs two earned on seven hits and one walk.
