Impressive shooting leads to Tanager win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers pulled away in the second half to down the Parkston Trojans 64-51 in varsity boys� basketball Feb. 20 at home. The Tanagers shot an impressive 60 percent from the field in the contest.
Paul Tims scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Jeremi Cowman contributed 11 points, and Bo Nelson scored 17 points, pulled down eight rebounds and made five assists.
�The boys are really working well together,� said Vermillion varsity Coach Troy Terronez. �They work the ball around for the open shot, and sometimes are a little too unselfish. I was concerned about our defense, but the guards came through. When the ball went inside, the posts were consistently double-teamed.�
The Tanagers jumped ahead 18-13 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 32-27 at halftime, and then led 49-36 after the third period.
The Tanagers committed only seven turnovers in the victory.
The Vermillion varsity improved its season mark to 10-5, while Parkston fell to 10-8.
The Vermillion varsity hit 3 of 10 three-pointers and made 15 of 26 from the line. The Tanagers made 28 of 47 field goals, while Parkston was 13 of 54 from the field. Parkston hit 5 of 18 three-pointers and sank 10 of 19 free throw tries.
