Softball team places third at DakotaDome Classic; Coyotes finish 3-1 for tournament The University of Mary (Bismarck, ND) won the DakotaDome Classic hosted by The University of South Dakota March 17-18.
Of the 16 games played at the DakotaDome, both the University of Mary and South Dakota State University had 4-0 records, but Mary had the advantage in run differential.
The Coyotes finished with a 3-1 record, losing to Wayne State 5-4 and beating Winona State 4-2 on March 17, while shutting out Minnesota-Crookston 9-0 and beating Northern State 9-4 on March 18.
Wayne State 5, South Dakota 4 � Wayne State (3-7) rallied for a 5-4 win over South Dakota by tying the game with three runs in the fifth and scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning at the DakotaDome Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Coyotes jumped to a 3-0 lead after two innings and added a run in the top of the fifth for a 4-1 lead before Wayne State rallied.
Janice Alswager allowed four runs and six hits in five innings of work. She had two strikeouts and walked a hitter. Sara Medved was the losing pitcher, allowing two hits and one run in an inning of work.
Leanna Chapman had two hits including a double and a run scored while Kaja Martinson also had two hits and a run scored. Melanie Robotham had a double for South Dakota.
South Dakota 4, Winona State 2 � Tiffany Hill (2-4) picked up her second win of the season by shutting down Winona State (7-5-1) in a 4-2 South Dakota win at the DakotaDome Classic on Saturday.
Hill allowed no runs and just four hits in six innings. Janice Alswager picked up a save in relief of Hill. She allowed two hits and two runs in one inning of relief work.
South Dakota scored two runs in both the first and fourth innings. Winona State scored twice in the seventh inning.
The Coyotes had four runs on seven hits and one error while Winona State had two runs on six hits and no errors.
Chapman had two hits, two RBI and a score scored while Keri Bolte had one hit and two RBI. Mollie Witherbee had two hits and a run scored.
South Dakota 9, Minnesota-Crookston 0 � Medved limited Minnesota-Crookston to four hits in five innings and recorded four strikeouts as she registered her second win (2-4) of the season. In the 9-0 victory, senior All-American catcher Tiffany Davis had a home run and a double plus two RBI to lead the Coyotes' offensive charge.
Chapman, who is hitting .467 on the season, had a pair of hits, a run scored and RBI while Julie MacRunnels had two hits, including a triple, with two RBI and two runs scored.
Tiffany Hopkins also had two hits, a run scored and RBI. Shortshop Robotham had a triple and an RBI while freshman Witherbee added a double.
South Dakota 9, Northern State 4 � South Dakota received a strong pitching performance from Hill, who allowed just one run on five hits in six innings of work. She also had five strikeouts and one walk. Alswager replaced Hill in the fourth but could not find her rhythm as Northern State scored three runs on four hits which forced USD head coach Kim Zarling to bring Hill back into the game in the fifth inning. Hill then shut down the visitors from Aberdeen.
Offensively for the Coyotes, MacRunnels had a single, double and triple in four at bats with four RBI and a run scored. Davis had two hits, including her fifth home run of the season and two RBI. Bolte added two hits, including a triple. Chapman was two for two with four runs scored.
