USD softball team sweeps Briar Cliff at home The University of South Dakota softball team defeated the Chargers of Briar Cliff by scores of 8-5 and 9-1 on Wednesday evening, March 14 in the DakotaDome.
The Coyotes improved their record to 5-7. The Chargers dropped to 3-8.
In the first game, Briar Cliff jumped out to an early 3-0 first inning lead against USD starter Tiffany Hill. Hill faced seven batters before Janice Alswager came in to relieve. The Coyotes got single runs in the first and second before the Chargers put two more on the board in the third to increase their lead to 5-2.
USD answered with six runs in the bottom half to push the score to 8-5. Melanie Robotham went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored. Jessica Bills had an RBI double as did Amie Mertens. Alswager (3-2) picked up the win in relief.
In the second game, the Chargers again put a dent in the scoreboard in the first on an RBI single from Josie Tarr. The Coyotes, however, managed to score in every inning to put the game away 9-1. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth.
Julie MacRunnels went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Tiffany Davis hit a triple, drove in a run on a single, and scored two runs. Kaja Martinson drove in two runs on a single and scored a run.
Sara Medved (1-2) went five innings, allowing only two hits and one run to pick up the complete-game win. She walked two and struck out one.
