Vermillion sixth-grade girls win shootout The sixth-grade girls' Vermillion Burger King team recently took first place in the Hinton, IA Invitational Shootout.
In the first game, Vermillion narrowly defeated the LeMars Bulldogs 29-25. Vermillion led most of the way, but saw its lead dwindle to 1 point late in the second half until key foul shots by Annie Roche and Ariel Hofman saved the day.
Roche scored 14 points, while Hofman and Hannah Pommersheim scored 6 points each, and Alicia Brown added 3 points.
In the second game, Vermillion handily defeated Hinton Dittmer 27-9. In this game, Vermillion's 1-3-1 zone press was effective in forcing many turnovers. Vermillion's balanced scoring was led by Roche with 14 points. Hofman scored 6 points, while Brown added 4 points, Kaili Johnson 2, and Brittni Stewart 1.
In the championship game, Vermillion defeated the Hinton Hawks 21-14. Vermillion led all the way in this contest and again deployed its 1-3-1 zone press to great effect. Hofman led the defense end with her consistent tenacity, while Roche again led the offense with 11 points. Brown added 6 points and Hofman and Anna Isaacson had 2 each.
Coach Randy Isaacson praised the girls for their consistent effort, determination and teamwork that paid off handsomely with their second tournament championship this season.
