Workshop focuses on preserving properties The Clay County Historical Preservation Commission has scheduled a two-part workshop from 7 to 9 p.m. on March 19 in the Vermillion Public Library Community Room. The first topic of the workshop will be conducted by Lynda Schwan of the South Dakota State Historical Society in Pierre.
She will inform Clay County property owners of the eligibility requirements and process by which property may be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The entire process, from preliminary forms to the final National Register paperwork will be covered.
Joy Sears will conduct the second part of the workshop discussing the tax-incentives for historical properties. Both the federal tax-credit and South Dakota's state property-tax moratorium will be discussed. In order for a property to be considered for either the federal or the state tax incentives it must be listed on the National Register.
Citizens residing anywhere in the city of Vermillion or Clay County are welcome to attend and inform themselves of the requirements and incentives for preserving their historical properties. For additional information contact the Austin-Whittemore House at 624-8266.
