Two Vermillion Boxing Team (VBT) members competed in Pierce, NE on March 3. Chonka Wilch in the junior boxer division met a seasoned and older boxer from the Kearney Boxing Club. Although showing the ability to "slug it out" during the first round, Wilch returned to his style of punch, dodge and counter-punch during the second round. With many power punches landing by both boxers, the bout was stopped at the end of the second round by the Vermillion coach and the victory went to the Kearney boxer.
Ben Bazemore fought in the senior division and was matched against one of Siouxland Boxing pugilists in a hard hitting crowd pleaser. Although Bazemore was able to trade punches for all three rounds with the older Siouxland boxer, he wasn't able to get the victory as he lost by decision.
The team travels this weekend to a special pre-Junior Olympics training camp sponsored by Siouxland Boxing, Sioux Falls. South Dakota Junior Olympics will be held in Sturgis on April 28-29.
