Girls' golf team gains fourth place at Yankton The expectation and enthusiasm of the Tanager girls' golf team, facing a 14-team high school tournament at Yankton on Friday, April 20, paid off with a fourth place among the "giants" represented by class 11AA schools (10 of them) and three class 11A teams.
Coach Kirk Hogen was pleasantly pleased with the performance of his young charges on a difficult golf course.
"We were able to score well, as a complete team, against some of the top teams in the state," he said. "We're now aware that we can compete with the bigger schools."
The common method of taking the best four out of five scores gave Vermillion a team score of 386 for 18 holes.
Individual Tanager scores were: Allison Stewart 87, Karrie Plate 94, Tabitha Hubert 103, Brooke Nelson 102, and Ashley Bjorkman 121. Stewart placed fifth and Plate was 15th overall among the nearly 80 golfers.
Tournament team scores were: Sioux Falls O'Gorman 345, Aberdeen Central 367, Brookings 370, Vermillion 386, Yankton 393, Sioux Falls Lincoln 397, Huron 407, Rapid City Stevens 415, Sioux Falls Roosevelt 418, Sioux City East 442, Lennox 450, Sioux Falls Washington 467, Brandon Valley 478, and West Central, incomplete team.
