Locals compete at State Willie Mac The First National Bank team, composed of Vermillion High School sophomores and freshmen, participated in the State Willie Mac Basketball Championships in Watertown March 22-23.
Twenty-four teams competed in Division II of the 10th-grade boys division.
Miller proved to be a talented first game opponent on Friday as the locals held a narrow 38-34 margin at halftime. The Rustlers fought back to tie the game, only to lose 69-67 on a last second tip-in by Nick Olson.
Jon Brooks paced the team with 20 points. Also in double figures were Olson 15, Jeff Brevik 10, and Tyler Brown 10.
Scoring was tougher in Saturday morning's game against Sioux Valley. Vermillion held a 5-point advantage at halftime, but fell behind by 8 points with less than four minutes to play. Their pressure defense held Sioux Valley to only 2 points over the remainder of the game, and Vermillion came away with a 47-44 victory.
Olson again scored 15 points with Brevik 9, Brooks 7, and Nathan Boots 7, leading the offense.
Vermillion needed one more victory to move into the winner's bracket round. The prospect for advancement appeared good as the locals led by 20 points at halftime over the Old Agency team. However the opponents put on a 3-point shooting exhibition in the second half to win the game 74-67. All nine members of the First National Bank team scored, with Adam Brunick leading the way with 13 points. Other high scorers were Olson 10, Brevik 8, and Brooks 8.
"This team has a lot of potential for the future," said Coach Nate Tibbets.
Other team members were Jared Burcham, Bart Miller and Rob Schaack.
