Obituaries Donald Hughes

Donald Leo Hughes, 82, of Sioux Sioux City, NE, died Saturday, March 31, 2001 at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital in Vermillion.

Mr. Hughes was born Dec. 13, 1918 in Newcastle, NE to Harry and Lucy (Hartley) Hughes. He graduated from Newcastle High School, and married Opal Bursell on Feb. 3, 1937. He entered the Army in 1944, serving during World War II. As a boy, he helped his family on the farm, and after the service, opened a used car dealership in Vermillion. After retiring from the car business, he continued his love for horses by racing them. His wife died in 1987.

He was a member of the Vermillion VFW, and the HBPA Horseman's Association.

Survivors includes his four sons: Roger of Phoenix, AZ, Terry of Henderson, NV, Richard (Rick) of Sitchfield Park, AZ, and Timothy of Vermillion; three daughters: Neta June Seney of Sitchfield Park, JoEllen (Toots) Solomon of Vermillion, and Evangeline (Sis) Patterson of Jolley, IA; a brother: Robert, of Denver, CO; 28 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 6 at the First Baptist Church in Vermillion. Burial followed in the BluffView Cemetery in Vermillion. Visitation was Thursday, April 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. with the family present, and a prayer service was held at 7 p.m., all at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.

Melvie Brunick

Melvie M. Brunick, 76, Lakeland, FL, formerly of Meckling, died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Thursday at Bergen Lutheran Church, rural Meckling, with the Rev. Martin Ganschow officiating. Burial will be in the Meckling Cemetery.

Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, was in charge of arrangements.

She was born Mary 26, 1924, at Meckling to Hans and Clara (Myron) Hanson. She was a graduate of Meckling High School. She married Lewis M. "Marion" Brunick Feb. 10, 1943.

She is survived by her husband: Lewis, Lakeland, FL; sons: Ronald, Round Mountain, NV, Terry, York Springs, PA, David, Orlando, FL, and Jeffrey, New Holland, PA; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
