Ray O'Connor selected for Team South Dakota The South Dakota High School Wrestling Coaches Association has selected Ray O'Connor as the heavyweight wrestler for Team South Dakota.
The team will represent South Dakota at the Walt Disney World/AAU National Dual Championships June 24-28 in Orlando, FL.
In 2000, Team South Dakota won the whole Disney Dual Tournament. Bob Johnson, head of the SD High School Wrestling Coaches Association stated, "We won it last year and everyone is going to be gunning for us so we must be ready."
Team South Dakota is made up of 13 wrestlers and three alternates who are all high-school juniors, were state place winners, and considered the best in their respective weight classes.
Scott Andal from Salem and Steve Keszler from Sturgis (both highly respected coaches in Class B and Class A) are the coaches for Team South Dakota. Other wrestlers on the team are from Huron, Belle Fourche, Yankton, Parkston, Mitchell, Winner, Salem, Custer, Arlington, Watertown, Milbank, Howard, Sturgis, and Rapid City Stevens.
Team South Dakota wrestlers will begin their duties with a training camp in Salem on June 20. They will fly to Orlando on June 22. Wrestling will occur June 24-27. Team South Dakota wrestlers will wrestle a minimum of nine dual matches. The wrestlers will also spend two days enjoying Disney World as a group. They will return to South Dakota on June 29.
O'Connor finished the season as region champion and placed third at the State Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City in February. He also broke two school records for the most pins in a season (27) and most wins, with a record of 42-6. He is the son of Larry and Rennae O'Connor.
