Sixth-grade girls win tournament

Sixth-grade girls win tournament The Vermillion girls' sixth-grade Burger King team capped its 2000-2001 season by winning the recent Roger Haas Basketball Tournament in Yankton.

This tournament championship was the third of the season for the Burger King squad and was a sweet addition to its first place finishes in the Tri-State Tournament in Sioux Falls and the Hinton Invitational Shootout in Hinton, IA.

In the first game, the Vermillion girls defeated Parkston by the score of 32-19. As it has throughout this season, Burger King employed its 1-3-1 zone press to great effect, causing many Parkston turnovers.

The offense was led by Alicia Brown's 10 points. Annie Roche and Hannah Pommersheim contributed 8 points each, with Ariel Hofman, Brittni Stewart and McKinsey Weydert adding 2 points apiece.

In the semi-final game, Vermillion faced the Dakota Jazz team from Sioux Falls. Dakota Jazz had defeated Vermillion soundly in a recent game in Sioux Falls and the Burger King girls were looking to turn the tables. It was a close contest all the way.

The Jazz opened up a 4-point lead late in the fourth quarter, but Vermillion rallied to tie the score with less than 30 seconds to play. With less than 10 seconds to go, Pommersheim grabbed an offensive rebound and passed to Roche, who in turn dished the ball to Hofman with 3 seconds remaining on the clock. Hofman caught the pass and arched a beautiful shot from the 3-point range that caught nothing but net.

Vermillion won 24-21 and the crowd went wild! The overall scoring was Roche 8 points, Hofman 7, Pommersheim 4, Brown 3 and Anna Isaacson 2.

In the championship game, Vermillion faced Avon, a team that defeated Vermillion earlier in the season. This time Vermillion would not be denied and led from start to finish and won by the score of 28-15.

Hofman began this game where she left off in the previous game with a 3-pointer that set the tone for the Burger King offense. This strong offensive start was coupled with intense play on the defensive side, notably Vermillion's 1-3-1 zone press and its ability to force costly turnovers by Avon.

Pommersheim and Brown were also very effective in controlling the boards for Vermillion. The overall offense was led by the penetration and outside shooting of Roche, who led all scorers with 13 points. Hofman contributed 9 points and Stewart and Kaili Johnson had 2 apiece.

Coach Randy Isaacson was elated with the team's performance. He was particularly grateful to see the team's consistent hard work and dedication pay such impressive dividends, especially after a relatively slow start in the early part of the season.

Coach Isaacson praised each one of his players Alicia Brown, Ariel Hofman, Anna Isaacson, Kaili Johnson, Hannah Pommersheim, Annie Roche, Brittni Stewart and McKinsey Weydert for their individual efforts that blended so well for the fine team results. He said he is already looking forward to next season!
