Vermillion HS suffers loss in opening baseball game The surroundings were familiar for the Vermillion team but the early season game was plagued by several errors (like eight!) which led to too many scores by the Roughriders from Sioux Falls.
Danny Holoch was the starting pitcher and gave up one hit, striking out five in his three-inning scoreless stint. Brett Mockler relieved in the fourth and surrendered two runs while striking out three in two innings pitched. Jeremy Yankton relieved Mockler and suffered through a four-error, three-hit, six-run result.
Dan Tolsma relieved Yankton in the sixth and also was victim of four errors and two hits which brought in five more runs. Jeff Gilbertson finished the game off, on the mound, giving up four runs off three hits.
Vermillion scored their only run of the game off a single from Dave Hanson in the bottom of the seventh that drove in B.J. Campbell. Pat Brooks and Josh Kyte had singles for the Tanagers.
Final score: 17-1, Roosevelt.
Next game will be at Nelson Park in Sioux Falls on Monday,
April 16 at 5 p.m. against
O'Gorman. Next home game for the Tanagers will be Wednesday, April 18 at 6 p.m. against Harrisburg.
Coach Jason Gault made the decision to play everyone in this opening game.
"The game was great through four innings, but I really wanted to get every one of my kids in, and I did, but the score reflects having to play some young and inexperienced kids," he said.
