Vickrey concert will assist domestic violence coalition

Vickrey concert will assist domestic violence coalition Mary Green Vickrey will perform a concert to benefit the Vermillion Coalition Against Domestic Violence at the United Church of Christ-Congregational on Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m.

The church is located in Vermillion at 226 East Main and is handicapped accessible. Dessert will be served following the concert. Door prizes will be given out during the concert. A free-will offering will be taken to benefit the local organization.

The concert will celebrate the release of Vickrey's debut recording, Horizon Unbounded. The recording contains 12 of her original songs of folk and bluegrass music. She reveals a love for the Midwest as she tells "true to life" stories in her songs about family and everyday life. Much of her writing displays her trademark unique sense of humor.

Vickrey will be accompanied by her producer, Steve Hanson, and bass player Jim Pipher, both of Lincoln. Hanson and Pipher will be appearing in their band, The Lightning Bugs, in June at the Vermillion Summer Arts Festival. The Lightning Bugs perform Mills Brothers songs and other '40s material.

Hanson has won national competitions for his banjo, mandolin and guitar playing. He finished first place in banjo at both the Winfield (Kansas) National Bluegrass Festival in 1978 and the Telluride (Colorado) Bluegrass Festival in 1992. He finished second in guitar at both Winfield in 1979 and Telluride in 1992, as well as second in mandolin at Telluride that year.

The Vermillion Coalition Against Domestic Violence is using the concert to kickoff National Crime Victims' Week. The coalition maintains a 24-hour hotline at 624-5311 to receive calls for domestic violence assistance.

They also receive referrals from the national hotline, 1-800-799 SAFE (7233).

Local staff and volunteers arrange for temporary shelter and transportation for those in volatile domestic situations and legal assistance in procuring protection orders. Information about domestic violence has been provided in the schools through the program, "Hands Are Not For Hitting."

CDs and cassette tapes of Horizon Unbounded are available directly from Vickrey at 624-2540 and at the Cherry Street Grille, Davis Pharmacy, Deb's Hallmark and the W.H. Over Museum in Vermillion.
