City leaders take oath; Three new faces join aldermen by David Lias The number of new faces nearly equal the more familiar ones on the Vermillion City Council.
Three new aldermen were given the oath of office Monday by Finance Officer Mike Carlson.
Dennis Zimmerman and Drake Olson, who were successful in their election bids last April to represent the Southeast and Central wards respectively, have begun two-year terms. They replace Frank Slagle and Leo Powell, who both chose not to run for re-election this year.
Jere Chapman, who was appointed by the city council to fill the Southeast Ward vacancy on the governing body when Roger Kozak was appointed Vermillion's new mayor, was also sworn in, as were incumbents Joe Grause and Kevin Annis, who weren't challenged in the city election.
Alderman Gary Wright was unanimously elected president of the council. John "Jack" Powell was elected vice president.
The make-up of the city council's committees also were approved. They are:
Labor and Finance: Chairman Annis, Grause and Zimmerman.
Utilities: Chairman Barbara
