Cowboys, cowgirls gear up for team penning activities at county rodeo grounds by M. Jill Karolevitz The Coyote Country Rodeo Club, Inc. will host its first big event of the season � team penning � at the Clay County Rodeo Grounds on Sunday, May 27, beginning at 2 p.m.
Admission is free to watch the team entries work their skills in the arena. Up to 60 teams will be entered, with the top 50 percent going to the second go-round. The top 15 teams will be entered into the finals.
Sponsors for the event are Jones� Food Centers, Coyote Country Rodeo Club, Inc., Hy-Vee, Budweiser, Fort Randall Casino and Hotel, Wells Fargo, JoDean�s, Southeast South Dakota Pheasant Association, the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan, and Polaris.
Several other events are also planned for this summer at the Clay County Rodeo Grounds by the Coyote Country Rodeo Club. Jackpot team roping and jackpot barrel racing are among the activities, along with the annual Bullarama on Sunday afternoon Sept. 9.
�We�ve made some changes for the Bullarama this year,� said Scott Hanson, a member of Coyote Country Rodeo Club. �We�ll have it on a Sunday afternoon rather than a Saturday night, and we�ve hired a different stock contractor, Gerald German from Sisseton.�
The event will be sanctioned by the Bull Riders of America.
�This will increase the appearance of professional bull riders,� Hanson said.
A new announcer, Blaine Partridge of North Loup, NE, will also be on hand. Kids calf riding and jackpot barrel racing have also been added to the day�s events.
