Flowerbed planting scheduled May 19

Flowerbed planting scheduled May 19 Vermillion Beautiful has organized a flower planting project for Saturday, May 19 beginning at 9:30 a.m., and invites community members of all ages to participate.

The coordinated planting of flowerbeds in downtown Vermillion and on Cherry Street has been in the works for one year.

Volunteers of all ages with respect for the good earth are particularly desired, but even those with simple curiosity about it are invited to participate in the planting.

They should meet in the Community First parking lot with rakes, shovels, trowels, brooms, or other relevant hand tools in tow. City bakers and coffee makers should feel free to volunteer their effort in the nourishment of volunteers.

The project was conceived when a request came forward that Vermillion Beautiful might plant one of the flowerbeds downtown. At that time separate businesses or groups took responsibility for the myriad flowerbeds contained there. The idea to coordinate the planting of all beds in order to develop cohesiveness, upgrade the soil, and generally improve the overall visual effect was conceived one year ago.

Vermillion Beautiful members who participated in their first downtown planting last year developed the project in order to create a lovelier landscape in Vermillion.

Joe Hoffman, a resident and landscape instructor, has developed a landscape plan with students he teaches. Downtown stores, the Chamber of Commerce, service organizations and individuals have contributed to the cost of purchasing plants and other expenses for the project.

Plans involve a team of workers who will roto-till the flowerbeds. Other volunteers will be dispersed to the various locations to prepare the soil, plant flowers and spread mulch.

Those who participated in the downtown planting of mums last fall are somewhat familiar with the process and will be a great asset to this effort. The experience should create feelings of warm satisfaction through the first freeze.

Donations are still needed for the project and can be directed to: Treasurer, Vermillion Beautiful, 233 S. Pine, Vermillion, SD 57069, or call 624-9795 for more information.
