Governor's Camp '01 to take place at USD More than 150 middle school-aged students will be invited to participate in the 18th annual South Dakota Governor's Camp, July 29-Aug. 2 at The University of South Dakota.
This year's theme is titled, "My Life-My Choice-My Future."
Students identified as "high ability and high potential" can participate in a program of academic studies enrichment activities, and career exploration. All classes are held on the USD campus using a combination of university faculty and adults working with the camp.
Tim Duggen, a graduate student at USD, is this year's camp director. Last year, Duggen directed drama classes for the camp and directs Shakespeare workshops in schools and communities throughout the year.
South Dakota Governor's Camp also serves as a "lab school" curriculum for training teachers to work with high ability students, with emphasis placed upon integrating school curriculum in an activity-based program.
This "College for Kids" will feature a wide range of offerings in classes and group activities including a variety of sciences and recreational opportunities. About 10 practicum students assist the camp as instructors and team leaders.
The fee for the camp is $300 per student and registration should be completed by June 15. For more information about the camp or to register, contact Dr. Bruce Milne, School of Education at (605) 677-5697 or Dr. Carole Kasen, TAG coordinator for Rapid City area schools at (605) 343-3242.
