Hoadley qualifies for tournament Jon Hoadley recently qualified for the national tournament in student congress to be held in Oklahoma June 19 – 15. This is the second year in a row that Hoadley received this award. Vermillion students Varsha Ramakrishnan and Matt Rognstad were both chosen as first alternates in their houses.
The top student speech competitors in the state compete to earn a place at the national tournament for student congress. Student congress replicates the procedures and format of the legislative branch. The students are given bills and resolutions to debate. These bills can range anywhere from socializing the pharmaceutical industry to covenant marriages.
The students are judged on their speaking ability, their depth of understanding of the issues, and their parliamentary procedures. Hoadley was one of five students in southern South Dakota who was awarded this honor.
