Large group contest huge success for VHS

Large group contest huge success for VHS April 4 was a great day for the Vermillion High School Department of Music. Freeman High School was the performance center for the 2001 SDHSAA Region I Large Group Music Contest.

All three VHS entries, Women's Chorus, Concert Choir and Symphonic Winds, received Division I (Superior) ratings. A Division I is the highest rating that an ensemble can receive at the contest.

This is the first time since 1996 that the Choral Division has been represented at Large Group Contest, while this year's performance produced the 10th straight Division I rating for the VHS Symphonic Winds.

Women's Chorus performed The Violet by Mark Patterson and Down by the Riverside arranged by Brant Adams. Concert Choir's selections were Celebrate with Jubilant Song by Mary Lynn Lightfoot and Saints Bound For Heaven arranged by Howard Helvey.

The Symphonic Winds performed Proud Heritage by William P. Latham and Empire Overture by Calvin Custer. Director of choral activities is Kristin Iverson. Director of bands is John Alpers.
