Pie Girls U-19 win soccer championship The Vermillion Pie Girls U-19 soccer team captured the championship of the Great Plains Classic Tournament last weekend in Sioux Falls.
The Pie Girls competed in a division with six teams representing Sioux Falls, Brookings, Mitchell, and Vermillion.
Vermillion opened competition Saturday morning with a 5-1 victory over the Brookings Talon.
After conceding the first goal early in the match, the Pie Girls stormed back on the strength of two goals by Kelly Peterson and three goals by Ashley VanHemert.
Shawna Baron and Hilary Pederson tended goal for the victors.
Saturday's second match pitted the Pie Girls against Sioux Falls Blitz. Vermillion prevailed by a score of 5-1, assisted by the smooth defense and transition of the back line consisting of Mandy Winckler, Kaylie Heesch, and Jena Gilkyson.
Scoring in the match for Vermillion were VanHemert with two, and Pederson, Peterson and Jackie Thomas with one each. Sharing goalkeeping duties were Jamie Bernard, Courtney Nelson and Pederson.
The Pie Girls advanced to the championship match with a Sunday morning 2-1 victory over the Great Plains Synergy. Reduced to only 10 players for the day, Vermillion controlled play and emerged victorious on a pair of goals by Pederson. Nelson and Kim Hoffman played in goal during the match.
The Pie Girls faced off against Sioux Falls Saturn in the afternoon championship game. Defending goal against a stiff wind in the first half, Vermillion conceded a single goal while missing several close shots of their own. The score equalized early in the second half when VanHemert broke loose on the left side and finished a beautiful far-post shot.
Pederson added an insurance goal later in the half to preserve the 2-1 victory and the tournament championship. Pederson and Nelson combined in goal.
Next action for the Pie Girls is May 29, when they host the Great Plains Magic at 7 p.m. at Cotton Park. The match is a tune-up for the State Tournament June 1 and 2 in Sioux Falls.
