Sports Fest offers fun, safe outdoor activities by M. Jill Karolevitz Sports Fest will offer a variety of outdoor activities for youth age 8 to 18 June 9 at the Clay County Sportsmens Club.
Participants are urged to pre-register by May 25 at the Clay County Extension office at 515 High Street. Attendance will be limited to 40.
Sponsored by the Clay County 4-H Shooting Sports Club, the Vermillion Pistol Club and the Clay County Sportsmens Club, Sports Fest is designed to teach kids both skills and safety as they venture outdoors.
The purpose of the event is to introduce young people to outdoor activities which include shooting sports and activities associated with them and the outdoors, said Bruce Plate, one of the Clay County 4-H Shooting Sports Club leaders.
Activities will include rifle marksmanship, trap shooting, archery, boating safety, firearm safety and demonstrations. Other activities are tentatively scheduled, such as outdoor preparedness and summer food safety programs.
Sports Fest has been a successful event in Clay County and this is the fourth event to be held.
It brings kids together for outdoor experiences in a supervised, structured and safe environment, Plate said. Each station will have a certified, trained individual who will show the kids the dos and donts of their subject. Its a great way for kids to learn and have fun, too.
Activities begin at 8 a.m. with check-in and Sports Fest will run until about 1 p.m. The event is free and lunch is included. Participants need not be 4-H members, but they will have the option to join the Clay County 4-H Shooting Sports Club when they sign up for Sports Fest.
