VHS baseball team faces O'Gorman, Lennox, BV The Tanager baseball team had a good start but bad finish as they lost the opening game in the first South Dakota High School Baseball tournament to Sioux Falls O'Gorman 14-2 in a 10-run rule shortened, five-inning, error-ridden first.
The Vermillion team scored two runs in the top of the first, scoring on a double by Brett Mockler, preceded by a walk and an error by the Knights. The bottom of the first turned into a nightmarish fiasco when O'Gorman scored 12 runs on four hits, four walks, and four errors, making starter Danny Holoch the losing pitcher.
Ryan Nelson relieved in the second inning and was charged with two runs for the remainder of the game.
The offense was mainly the double by Mockler, and singles by Jeff Gilbertson and BJ Campbell.

In a see-saw scoring game against Lennox, the Vermillion baseball team prevailed 10-7. The Tanagers took a 3-2 lead, then fell behind 6-3 after three innings; retook the lead 7-6 after four innings and put the game away in the fifth with a three-run surge.
Winning pitcher was Drew Lawrence who went the distance giving up nine hits, five walks, and enjoyed no errors in the field while striking out seven.
Offensively Nelson went two for four, scored twice and drove in two. Pat Brooks, from his leadoff spot, was two for four, scored once and had two RBI. Campbell had two runs, one RBI, and two for three at bat.
Gilbertson scored a run, and drove in one, going two for three batting. Mockler had two RBI going two for four; and Josh Kyte scored twice, drove in one, and went one for four.
Line scores: Vermillion � 10 runs, 13 hits, 0 errors, 4 LOB; Lennox � 7 runs, 9 hits, 4 errors, 6 LOB.
Brandon Valley took a 2-0 lead when the Tanagers went on a scoring rampage with seven runs in the third inning. They held on as the Lynx chipped away, scoring two in the fifth and four in the sixth while Vermillion would have to settle for an 8-8 tie with their run in the sixth requiring extra innings.
BV scored the winning run in
the bottom half of the eighth to end the high school season.
Nelson started and gave up one run with one hit. He gave way to Holoch in the third inning and he was charged with two runs and two hits before being relieved by Mockler when three straight hits sent Holoch to second base with two more runs charged against him.
Mockler was charged with the two runs that tied the score and the extra inning score making him the losing pitcher.
Brooks led the offense going two for four with two runs and three RBI to his credit. The other six runs were scored by each of everyone in the lineup except Holoch and Campbell. Dan Tolsma was two for five with one RBI; Nelson was two for four and had one RBI. Mocklerwas one for five with one RBI, and Gilbertson had an RBI sacrifice.
