Yankton squeaks by VHS golf team by two points "Our objective is to make the effort to keep the winning margin close, but we intend that difference favors the Tanagers," said Vermillion High School Golf Coach Kirk Hogen.
"Playing a different golf course like Fox Run, for most of the Vermillion girls, caused some problems with on-course management and some loss of concentration," he added.
That was illustrated by the results of a match played last Friday, May 11 when the Tanagers fell to the Gazelles 370-372.
Medalist, with a score of 83, was Allison Stewart, and Karrie Plate placed second with 89, followed by Tabitha Hubert at 96, Ashley Bjorkman with 104, and Brooke Nelson at 106.
The JV matches went Vermillion's way with a 424-483 victory for the Tanagers' junior varsity. All the youngsters got to play and the coach wants to recognize their efforts.
Megan Deaver scored 102, Dru Van Kley 103, Nicole Veitz 109, and Jackie Thomas and Kaylie Heesch each had 110. The top four of the best five scores determined the team score.
The remaining players' scores were: Meggie Donnelly 118, Dani Weydert 139; and Megan Bedard 150.
With a very young team, sporting only one senior and two juniors, it was not too surprising for Thomas to earn a varsity letter (except that she was an eighth grader). Way to go, Jackie!
