Young baseball team sweeps games at Parker The Vermillion baseball team improved its record as they defeated Parker 14-3 and 11-9 in a doubleheader on Friday, May 4 in a rescheduled game in the 18-team league.
In the first game, Adam Brunick pitched a one-hit, three-run gem as he struck out nine, walked four and was backed up in the field by only two errors. He pitched the complete game and only one of the runs was earned.
The offense was led by Dave Hanson with four for four hits and five RBI. Pat Brooks went three for three, scoring three and had two RBI. Brett Mockler was two for four, scored two and drove in two, and Brunick aided his cause with two for four batting and scoring a run.
Dan Holoch was one for three, scored three and had an RBI. Ryan Nelson also went one for three, scored three and had an RBI. Jeff Gilbertson scored a run with one for four plate appearances.
First game line score: VHS � 14 hits, 14 runs, 2 errors; PHS � 3 runs, 1 hit, 4 errors.
Both teams scored three runs in the first inning of the second game, but the Tanagers made it look like a rout by scoring seven in the third while the Pheasants could only respond with one run.
However, the fourth inning belonged to Parker as they scored five to make the scoring spread 10-9 going into the fifth and final inning (doubleheader rule).
Vermillion scrounged up one more run on a couple of hits and a walk to close out the scoring, since starting pitcher Drew Lawrence struck out the side to end the game. His game performance on the mound included eight strike outs, seven walks and four hits, giving him credit for the win.
Offensively, three players each went two for three, scored a run and were credited with one RBI each � Gilbertson, Nelson and Josh Kyte. Mockler went three for three, scored three and had five RBI, and Holoch scored once on two for three batting and two RBI. Brooks was one for three, scored one and drove in one.
