4-H Special Foods contest held

4-H Special Foods contest held Three local members and one Union County member participated in the Clay County 4-H Special Foods contest held Tuesday, June 19 at the Vermillion High School.

Each participant had one-and-a-half hours to prepare a dish of their choice, coordinate a table setting and a meal menu. In addition, participants were tested on their knowledge of nutrition, food safety and food preparation.

Beginner division purple ribbon winners and their entries are: Chad Peterson � Hoppin Poppins, and Kirstin Hanson � Stuffed Pork Butterflies.

Participants receiving purple ribbons in the junior division and their entries are: Andy Peterson � Popover Pancakes, and Kelly Miskimins � Fruited Pork Chops.

The judge for the Youth in Action event was Sharon Guthmiller of Yankton.

Purple ribbon winners are now eligible to advance to the state competition at the 2001 South Dakota State Fair in Huron July 30-31.

Copies of the participants' recipes are available upon request at the Clay County Extension Office.
