Golfers awarded all-state honors The cap-off of the Tanager girls' golf season was the excellent showing by the participants from Vermillion in the state tournament played at Spearfish on Monday and Tuesday, May 22-23.
Only three team members qualified for state � Allison Stewart, Karrie Plate and Ashley Bjorkman, all sophomores. Stewart and Plate gained all-state honors by placing in the top 20 out of the 103 competitors entered. Stewart was seventh and Plate placed 19th.
Bjorkman was in the top half of the scores after her first-ever round of state competition, but weather conditions affected her play on Saturday and she settled to finish in the top two-thirds.
Coach Kirk Hogen was really pleased with the outcome at state.
"It's no small accomplishment when these youngsters earn medals in a competitive atmosphere," he said. "They certainly earned the title of 'all-state.'
"The team's performance during the season can be attributed to the leadership from the lone senior on the squad, Tabitha Hubert," Hogen added. "She was a stalwart in encouraging the underclass girls with her attitude and hard work. With the team comprised of all underclassmen, we look forward to a successful 2002 season."
