History outlines past with a laugh; play continues through weekend

History outlines past with a laugh; play continues through weekend by M. Jill Karolevitz The DLM Theatre Group is exhausted. And rightfully so. Their latest play takes them through 60,000 years of North American History in just 90 minutes!

The Complete History of America (Abridged), will be presented June 21-24 at Farber Hall in Old Main, with performances at 7 p.m. each night.

Written by Adam Long, Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor, the play combines comedy, satire and irony to give the audience a different look into how America was developed. Actors Pat Pope, Tom Simmons and Bill Myers play all the parts, including Lewis and Clark as a vaudeville act.

Daniel L. Miller directs The Complete History of America (Abridged).

We chose this play because its light hearted and fun, Miller said. We wanted to provide the audience with an evening of laughter. Its basically three comedians discussing 60,000 years of North American history.

Myers agrees.

We cover a lot of history, he said. But its not necessarily accurate. Its a lot of tongue-in-cheek, along with some improvisation. Its different from a ?normal stage production, but its a lot of fun.

The intimate setting of Farber Hall on the campus of The University of South Dakota also provides the actors interact with the audience.

But we wont tell you how, Myers said, with a grin.

He did, however note that the World War I segment features soldiers fighting with high-powered water guns.

The Complete History of America (Abridged) was also presented during the Vermillion Summer Arts Festival.

People walked away with tears rolling down their cheeks from laughter, Miller said.

He added that the play is available for benefits, group parties and community celebrations. Miller said he is also working with Royal River Casino, Fort Randall Casino and the Main Street Blues Club in Sioux Falls to present The Complete History of America (Abridged) there.

The DLM Theatre Group is associated with The University of South Dakota College of Fine Arts. Miller is pursuing a master of fine arts degree in directing, as is Myers. Pope and Simmons are working toward their bachelor of fine arts degrees in acting.

Previous plays presented by the DLM Theatre Group over the past five summers are Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Love, Sex and the IRS, and Cordelias Daughter.

The Complete History of America (Abridged) is rated PG-13, due to adult innuendos. Tickets are $5.
