Karen Sorensen elected to several posts at Girls State Karen Sorensen, daughter of Jim and Mariella Sorensen of Vermillion, was elected health commissioner, jury member, election board member and passed the FBI exam during the 55th session of the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State of South Dakota.
Held at South Dakota State University in Brookings, May 28-June 2, the event hosted approximately 470 junior girls for the week-long event.
The goal of the American Legion Auxiliary is to provide each Girls State delegate with a brighter understanding of Americanism and a better perspective of the rights and responsibilities of an American citizen.
Under the belief that the best way to learn is by doing, SD Girls State provides training and "hands-on" practice in government at the city, county, and state levels. Thus, delegates are involved in such activities as campaigns, election boards, party conventions, legislative sessions, lobbying, court trials, and executive cabinet meetings.
Featured guest speakers highlighting this year's session included Governor William Janklow, Lt. Governor Carole Hillard, Secretary of State Joyce Hazeltine, County Commissioner Deb Knecht, and Mayor Brenda Barger.
