Post #1 baseball team goes 2-1 in Freeman tournament

Post #1 baseball team goes 2-1 in Freeman tournament The Vermillion Post #1 team played Freeman, one of the top "B" Legion teams in South Dakota, in the first game of the Freeman tournament last weekend, June 22-23.

Vermillion's Danny Holoch pitched a fine game, allowing two runs (one unearned) while striking out 14, walking four, and giving up three hits. Conversely, Freeman's pitcher Adam Sudbeck tossed a no-hitter, giving up one run while striking out 13 batters and walking eight.

Line scores: Freeman 2 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors; Vermillion Post #1 1 run, 0 hits, 2 errors.

Holoch started and went the timed two-hour limit game, being charged with the loss. Freeman's scores came on a home run by Jered Neger and the unearned run, the result of a triple by Ben Wermers followed by an error.

Game #2 was against Mount Vernon and proved to be a slug-fest as the teams combined for 20 hits,16 bases on balls and a total 24 runs.

Line scores: Mount Vernon 14 runs, 10 hits, 1 error; Vermillion 10 runs, 10 hits, 9 errors.

Chad Grenway was credited with the win when the two-hour time limit was invoked with the Vermillion team having the bases loaded and only one out (as I understand).

Tim Brodersen drove in two runs and scored three in three official at bats. Tyler Vacek went two for four and scored two. BJ Campbell scored two runs on his three plate appearances and Eric Rickord, Jeff Gilbertson and Josh Kyte each scored a run.

Game #3 against Tea was a forfeit in favor of Post #1 when the other team lost a runner (with a broken leg) on the first play of the game, in a collision with a Vermillion player. Tea was left with a short-handed team (they had brought only nine members) so forfeited the game.
