Post #1 goes 2-3 in Hastings baseball tourney The Vermillion Post #1 team played in the Hastings, NE, Invitational last weekend, June 8-10, facing some new opponents rather than their usual South Dakota teams.

They won two and lost three, with a variety of outcomes.

Game one against Kearney, NE, had an exciting finish when BJ Campbell drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was one of only four hits for Vermillion, as nine walks from the Kearney pitcher, M. Mauler, offered enough scoring opportunities to keep the score close.

The score stood at 6-4 after five innings.

Line scores: Kearney � 6 runs, 9 hits, 3 errors; Vermillion Post #1 � 7 runs, 4 hits, 4 errors.

Dan Holoch started and went the seven innings, giving up nine hits while registering eight strike outs and walking one, being charged with three earned runs and getting credit for the win.

The offense was led by Drew Lawrence who went with two for four hits, scoring twice. Pat Brooks walked three times in his lead-off spot, and scored once. Holoch aided his cause by scoring a run and driving in one, and Campbell went one for two, scoring one and driving in one.

Game #2 was against Hastings and almost became a "laugher" for starting pitcher Lawrence who went 6 1/3 innings before being rescued by Tim Brodersen who came in with the bases loaded and three runs already scored in the final inning.

Brodersen promptly retired the remaining batters on two fly-outs to saved the game. Lawrence was credited with the win for Vermillion, striking out 10 batters and walking three, only one of the six scores was earned.

Line scores: Hastings � 6 runs, 5 hits, 2 errors; Vermillion � 9 runs, 13 hits, 1 error.

Ryan Nelson drove in two runs and scored two in three official bats. Pat Brooks was three for five and scored once, driving in two. Jeff Gilbertson scored one run, had one RBI from his three at bats, and Campbell was three for four, scoring two runs and two RBI.

Game #3 against Sutton, NE, was a nightmare of mental and fielding errors for Post #1 as the 11-3 loss would attest. Brodersen was the starter and the victim of eight errors while giving up only four hits and walking six.

Line scores: Sutton � 11 runs, 4 hits, 2 errors; Vermillion � 3 runs, 7 hits, 8 errors.

Nelson, Adam Brooks and Campbell each scored a run while Tyler Vacek and Gilbertson were credited with an RBI each.

Game #4 against Grand Island, NE, put Nelson to the test and he came through with a five-hit, six-strikeout performance. Unfortunately, the Post #1 batters were able to counter with only three hits, and striking out five times. The result was a hard-fought loss for Nelson 4-2.

Line scores: Grand Island � 4 runs, 5 hits, 3 errors; Vermillion � 2 runs, 3 hits, 3 errors.

Vacek, Adam Brooks and Holoch had the hits and Brett Mockler scored one run, Vacek, the other. Holoch was credited with an RBI and one for three batting.

Game #5 against Lincoln SE was a close contest � except for one inning! Post #1 was cruising along with a 4-0 lead in the middle of the third inning when the roof fell in again � three consecutive errors opened the flood gates on starter Holoch who was charged with three hits and three earned runs in the six-run bottom of the third.

Holoch was relieved in the fourth inning by Lawrence, but the damage had been done and the team was unable to mount an effective counterattack while Lincoln scored single runs in two of the three final innings.

Line scores: Lincoln SE � 8 runs, 4 hits, 5 errors; Vermillion � 4 runs, 5 hits, 4 errors.

Brodersen went two for four and scored a run. Nelson was one for three with a run scored. Vacek scored one run for his one for four batting record. Gilbertson scored the other run and Adam Brooks, along with Holoch, were each credited with RBIs.

"If we can eliminate just a few of those errors, we can be a really good force in every contest," said Coach Jason Gault after the tournament.
