Roger Delaney named Rural Carrier of Year by M. Jill Karolevitz Roger Delaney, Vermillion, has been named the states Rural Carrier of the Year by the South Dakota Rural Letter Carriers Association.
The award, based on a rural carriers service to the association, as well as community service and a good working relationship with the postmaster, was presented last weekend during the associations annual convention in Deadwood.
Delaney, who is beginning his 20th year as a member of SDRLCA, has served in many offices in the organization and is currently as past president. He said he was tongue-tied when his name was called as Rural Carrier of the Year.
It was a surprise, he said. But I feel honored and humbled to receive it.
Delaney credits Alfred Bob Clark, as his mentor. Clark was the last person from Vermillion to be named Rural Carrier of the Year in 1965. He retired in 1989.
Bob was a long-time officer in the association, Delaney said. I guess I followed in his footsteps. He got me involved. Bob List from Yankton was also a mentor.
Delaney has been delivering Rural Route 2 mail since 1980.
It goes from the golf course to the interstate east of town and covers all the Burbank addresses, he said. When Bill Radigan retired after 16 years with this route, I took over.
